Education, Not Incarceration: Healing Through Culture and Creativity
These presenters link the dis-ease of violence and crime to the goals and self image of the society they afflict. Through a wealth of hands on experience, these peace workers show how prison reform could be a cornerstone of a much healthier society. Shane Edwards, Maori, was born and raised in Auckland, he's Executive Director, Quality Improvement and Research, for Te Wananga o Aotearoa, a culturally based alternative education system in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Manulani Aluli Meyer is an international scholar and cultural practitioner currently based in Aotearoa. Her doctorate from Harvard focused on Hawaiian epistemology. Daniel “Nane” Alejandrez is the Founder and Executive Director of Barrios Unidos, an award winning grassroots organization addressing issues of youth, violence, and gangs. Felipe Hernandez is a worker with Barrios Unidos.
